SAP S/4HANA · Project leadership · PMO

Leading SAP programmes from the decision paper to go-live.

I lead sub-projects and PMOs in SAP S/4HANA programmes as an independent project lead. My focus is on clear decisions, honest reporting and teams that know what matters this week. Where it fits, I bring in the agile methods I use as an agile coach.

What an SAP programme needs from its project lead

SAP S/4HANA programmes rarely fail because of the software. They stall when business, IT and the implementation partner work to different plans, when decisions wait for the next steering committee, and when status reports stay green until shortly before go-live.

My job is to make the real status visible and to get decisions made in time. That means one plan the business, IT and partners all recognise, risks with an owner and a date, and reporting that leadership can trust.

What I take on

  • Sub-project leadership in SAP S/4HANA programmes, including process and test case management
  • Lead PMO and programme PMO in multi-party programmes, aligning business, IT and implementation partners
  • Decision papers and reporting for C-level and steering committees, with risk-benefit assessments
  • Budget, time and scope controlling, combined with active risk and change management
  • KPI and OKR tracking that links project milestones to business outcomes

Agile where it helps, not as a label

Most SAP programmes run on a phase plan with fixed releases, and often that is right. SAP’s own implementation method, SAP Activate, already combines phases with iterative build cycles.

Agile methods still help inside that frame: short planning cycles for sub-teams, user stories that business and IT both understand, workshops that end with decisions and a steady rhythm of reviews. I have built SCRUM teams and introduced OKRs in telecommunications and FinTech. In SAP programmes I use the parts that fit, for example user-story quality workshops with business and IT, without forcing a framework onto the programme.

How I work

  • Understand: context, people and real constraints first, before proposing any method.
  • Structure: turn complexity into a plan, clear decisions and reporting leadership can trust.
  • Deliver: steer the day-to-day, remove blockers, keep technology and project management in sync.
  • Anchor: hand over capabilities, not dependencies, so the change lasts.

FAQ

Questions about SAP project leadership

What does an independent SAP project lead do?

An independent project lead steers a sub-project or the PMO on the client side: planning, coordinating the implementation partner, preparing decisions for the steering committee and reporting status honestly. Working for the client rather than for a partner helps when plans and interests differ.

Do you work agile or waterfall in SAP programmes?

Both, depending on the programme. I keep the phase plan where the programme needs fixed releases and use agile elements such as short cycles, clear backlogs and regular reviews inside the teams.

Can you combine project leadership and test management?

Yes. As sub-project lead in a group-wide SAP S/4HANA Utilities rollout I was responsible for process and test case management, so I know how test progress has to show up in programme reporting.

Where do you work?

I am based in Amsterdam and work remotely with clients across Europe, in German and English.
