SAP S/4HANA test management, so go-live is a decision, not a gamble.

I run test management in SAP S/4HANA programmes, with a focus on utilities moving onto SAP S/4HANA Utilities. From the test strategy to the defect process and the go-live decision, with SAP Cloud ALM or SAP Solution Manager as the central tool.

Why utilities programmes need their own test management

An S/4HANA Utilities programme changes billing, device management, market communication and customer service at the same time, often for several companies of a group or several utilities on one platform. If every sub-project tests on its own, nobody sees whether the end-to-end processes work until integration testing starts.

Test management connects those sub-projects with one test strategy, one tool and one defect process, and turns test results into facts the programme can decide on.

What I take on

  • Test strategy and test governance across system integration, user acceptance and regression testing
  • Process and test case management across several ERP sub-areas
  • SAP Cloud ALM as the central hub for test and quality management
  • Jira and Cloud ALM workflows and a defect process that business, IT and partners actually follow
  • User-story quality workshops with business and IT
  • Test automation with Tricentis to secure releases and upgrades
  • Test status reporting to programme lead and executive management

SAP Cloud ALM or Solution Manager?

SAP ends mainstream maintenance for SAP Solution Manager 7.2 on 31 December 2027. Extended maintenance until the end of 2030 covers selected functions only, including the Test Suite. Programmes that start now usually set up their testing in SAP Cloud ALM.

I introduced SAP Cloud ALM as the central test tool in a multi-utility S/4HANA programme and also know SAP Solution Manager 7.2 with Focused Build. That helps test teams understand what changes for them when the tool changes, and what has to be in place before the first test cycle.

What the go-live decision should rest on

  • Coverage of the critical end-to-end processes, not just the number of executed test cases
  • Open defects by severity, each with an owner and a date
  • Sign-off from the business users who will work with the system
  • A regression set that protects the next release and upgrade

FAQ

Questions about SAP test management

What does an SAP test manager do in an S/4HANA programme?

The test manager defines the test strategy, plans test phases such as integration, acceptance and regression testing, sets up the test tool and the defect process, coordinates testers from business, IT and partners, and reports test status as a basis for the go-live decision.

Should we test with SAP Cloud ALM or Solution Manager?

For new programmes, usually SAP Cloud ALM, because mainstream maintenance for Solution Manager 7.2 ends on 31 December 2027. Extended maintenance until the end of 2030 covers selected functions, including the Test Suite, so running programmes have time but should plan the move.

Can SAP Cloud ALM work together with Jira?

Yes. In a multi-utility S/4HANA programme I designed the Jira and Cloud ALM workflows and the defect process. How the tools are connected best depends on your landscape and integration options.

Do you only work for utilities?

My focus is SAP S/4HANA Utilities. Test strategy, defect process and Cloud ALM work the same way in other S/4HANA programmes, so I support those as well.

Planning the tests for your S/4HANA go-live?

Tell me where your programme stands. I’ll come back within two working days with a first view on whether I can help.
