Make learning relevant

Engaging people involves understanding the skills their work requires and giving them opportunities to develop. A shared competency framework can help identify needs in areas such as communication and teamwork, alongside the skills specific to a role.

Turn that understanding into a practical training programme. Newcomer orientation, e-learning, classroom training, and learning about customers or products can each play a part. Development should be present in everyday working life, rather than existing only as a plan.

Define values together

Clearly established values give people something to connect with. Where possible, involve employees in defining those values so they become a shared reference point for how the organisation works.

Values need to be communicated and lived. Connecting daily work to the organisation’s vision can help people understand their contribution and take responsibility for it.
